This months Soul Sides is held at the basement of Club YK. We welcome DJ Jens Chreisti for his first visit in Helsinki. Jens has been playing fine soulful records since the early 90's. Widely known as one of Swedens top record collectors and soul selectors. Based in Stockholms southern boroughs, he controls some of the finest soul there is. If it's about djing or searching for new dance floor monsters Jens has never made compromises in quality. This quality is shown through his range of rare steppers, northern and modern soul, deep funk and rare grooves played at clubs, bars, boats and weekenders around Sweden.

Jazz Heat Bongo Beat VS Soul Sides @ Kuudes Linja Saturday 18.9.2010
More jazz, more soul! Jazz Heat Bongo Beat meets Soul Sides at Kuudes Linja. On board are Soul Sides DJs Sami Dariush & Heikki H, plus Bongo Beat’s Antti Eerikäinen & Matti Nives. The best of both worlds, right here.
George Mahood (Soul Or Nothing, Big Daddy, Concourse Records)
Soul Sides is extremely proud to have over a top gentleman from UK! We welcome George Mahood (Soul Or Nothing, Big Daddy, Concourse Records) for his first visit to Kuudes Linja and Club YK! Have a read through his bio and you'll see that George is a serious music lover.
”I started out by promoting numerous hip-hop and funk/soul events in Nottingham, UK during the mid to late ‘90s, but I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the music press that I couldn’t get rid of. I eventually achieved a long time ambition by founding a magazine in 1998, called Big Daddy, which dealt with the some of my preoccupations from that era like funk 45s, sample-based rap music, roots reggae, graffiti and generally keeping it real. It was enthusiastically received by thousands of information starved pre-internet record fiends, which initially came as quite a shock. I remained editor until its untimely death in 2002, and then co-edited its inferior replacement Grand Slam magazine until 2004.
Thanks to the high underground profile of the magazines, some great DJ gigs came my way that quite frankly I didn’t really deserve. But being around a lot of top DJs and seeing how they worked, and holding down a two year residency in Nottingham playing for six hours 9pm-3am every week both helped me improve a bit over the years. I am currently the resident at Steve Cato’s Soul or Nothing events in Manchester, playing upfront funk & soul 45s to confused members of the UK northern soul scene. In the past few years I’ve played as a guest at various promotions including Lost & Found and Bumpshop in New York, The Get Down in Milwaukee, Mercy! in Richmond VA, Moneytown in Washington DC, Funk Squad in Munich, We Are Soul in Berlin, Soul Seed in Turku, Soul Sides in Helsinki, Struttin’ in Amsterdam, Heavy Listening in Toulouse and Lifeline in Stoke.
To pay the bills, I sell second hand vinyl under the name Concourse Records. I’m also currently writing an in-depth history of the UK’s early ‘90s hardcore & jungle scene, which is a subject very close to my heart.”
We at Soul Sides whole heartily welcome you to both nights, the Friday ”warm-up” at the cozy basement of Club YK and the soul dance party at Kuudes Linja on Saturday!
The soulful weekend also features a radio show on Saturday morning with our guest DJ. Tune in to Bassoradio 102,8 Mhz at 10am-12am.
Soul Sides turns into it's 7th year on June 26th. And to make this even more special it's the midsummer night (juhannus in Finnish) when the sun doesn't set at all. So it's all soul and sunshine with a very special guest DJ Sebastian Fonzeus from Malmö, Sweden. Sebastian was ment to headline the last Soul Sides, but due to the volcano in Iceland we had to change the date to 26th June. So in double anticipation we are looking forward to have this gent as our guest DJ. Sebastian runs a popular monthly night with Helena, Jonte and Joppe called Function in the fantastic venue Babel. They pack as much as 750 people in to their monthly nights and play the best dance music: SOUL! At Soul Sides Sebastian will spin an eclectic mix of pounding, uptempo northern soul, funk, modern soul, underground disco and boogie. Sebastian also does regular mixes for people to hear what type of stuff he spins. We at Soul Sides highly recommend heading to Shingaling.Com where you can listen to several quality mixes from Sebastian!
As we the weather is likely to be lovely and we are turning in to our 7th year we will do a daytime warm-up session at the terrace of the Kuudes Linja venue! A gang of local and foreign dj's are going to spin during the terrace warm-up so get your dancing shoes polished in early for this special saturday! Oh and don't forget to check out Soul Sides radio every Sat mornings from 10 to 12 on Basso FM.

Soul Sides is proud to start the new decade with a special guest dj from London, England. We welcome Dj Gareth X for his very first Helsinki gig. Gareth is a well respected collector and dj with huge amount of information on independent soul music from 60's and 70's. He is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable collectors on the regarded soul-source message board. We at Soul Sides are proud to present a dj with such exquisite taste as Gareth has. The night will be a bliss of x-over and northern soul with a mix of modern soul and funkier sounds! Just the right ingredients to make up a proper soul dance party!
Soul Sides dj's Sami Dariush and Heikki H will do their best to keep the packed dance floor of Kuudes Linja going.

Soul Sides - the biggest soul night in Finland gets ready to wrap up another successful year. We've had the worlds leading soul jocks grace our packed dance floor party after party this year. The atmospehere at Kuudes Linja has been better than ever thanks to our wonderful crowd, the guest dj's and the great staff at the venue.
For this x-mas party we thought we should do a Suomi-Soul special with the two leading Helsinki dj's just to remind people that there are some serious players in our little city too. Tupla-Jukka is best known for being the CEO of Timmion Records and the drummer and mastermind of the worlds number one funk and soul band - The Soul Investigators. A band that has been at it for more than ten years now. Bringing the real soul and funk sound to the dancers with their instrumental efforts and collaborations with such great vocalists as Nicole Willis, Herb Johnson, Big Joe Lewis, Myron & E and their latest collaboration by NOLA soul legend Willie West. But Tupla-Jukka is also a first class dj with a collection that has been built over 15 years with great taste. He will most surely keep the floor going with his selection of crossover, northern and some hard edged funk records.
Our another guest dj represents the younger collectors of Helsinki. Jussi B has built a serious collection of dance floor friendly modern, crossover and funk sounds and always has some new treats in his record boxes. His too rarely heard sets will be anticipated by collectors and dancers alike.
As usual the Soul Sides dj's Sami Dariush and Heikki H will do their best to keep the dance floor going with their current and future Soul Sides anthems.
Mr. Fine Wine grew up in Detroit in the 1960s and '70s, surrounded by
music and by music-industry people. He went to school with the offspring
of Motown stars; his uncle (believe it or not!) taught John Lee Hooker how
to play guitar chords and owned the local record label Tuba. An avid
collector of soul 45s for 25 years, Fine Wine started DJ'ing soon after he
relocated to New York City. His radio show, "Downtown Soulville", has been converting casual listeners around
the world into soul freaks since 1994. TimeOut London magazine called it
one of the best independent music podcasts in the world. In addition to
presiding over many local dance parties through the years (including the
Empire State Soul Club, Bumpshop, and Horse River Social), he has held
down a weekly residency at Manhattan dive bar Botanica since 1996--perhaps
the longest-running weekly soul-45 listening party in the world, and one
that has attracted visiting luminaries such as Keb Darge, Ian Wright,
Butch, Egon, Dante Carfagna, Tim Brown, Sami Dariush, and Cut Chemist.
Countries where Fine Wine has DJ'd with his across-the-board mix of R&B,
soul, blues, and funk include Spain, Turkey, Russia, Scotland, England,
Canada, Norway, and Germany, and he has backed the likes of the Mighty
Hannibal, the Gories, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Brian Auger, Dee Dee
Ramone, DJ Shadow, the Detroit Cobras, Cody Black, Rudy Ray Moore, and
Nathaniel Mayer. He has also compiled and written liner notes for the
collections "Vital Organs" (Grooovysounds Unltd.) and "Crash of Thunder"
(Vampisoul) and is working on two new compilations for Vampisoul. Fine
Wine and his friend the Mighty Hannibal are the subjects of a
feature-length documentary film, currently in production, called
"Showtime."
This soulful Saturday will kick of with our guest DJ at Bassoradio 102,8 Mhz at am 10-12.

Summer is coming to an end. Jack will cast his cold stone in the waters and from the ripples rises Soul Sides, the last recluse of warmth. As it happens, a guest arrives to Kuudes Linja to provide additional light from a city that never withers in the cold.
Cristina Alonso from Barcelona has proved her skills in almost every soul happening in southern Europe and also played gigs in places from London to Boston.
Cristina is master of variety and because of that she will compliment our open-minded soul night perfectly. The lady's record bag contains the essence of what has become expected on the last saturday of every other month at Kuudes linja: 60's & 70's soul, rhythm & blues and latin soul. In addition to this fool proof recipe one dares to expect vinyl rarities of the surprising kind.
Past and future Soul Sides hits will be heard once again from the holy trinity of Soul-Sami, Heikki H and Markus-Setä. The latter will say goodbye to the soul nights at Kuudes linja at least for a year. Be nice, people.
Listen to the Soul Sides radio show with Soul-Sami and Markus-Setä every Saturday 10-12 am at Bassoradio 102,8 MHz or stream at www.basso.fi
The #1 soul club in Finland celebrates it's 6th Anniversary. We have been able to organize Soul Sides on Kuudes linja for two years now thanks goes to the fabulous crowd, which has supported the night.
Our special guest comes from the UK as Mr. Arthur Fenn comes to headline the party. It appears we will be joined by a true veteran:
I got hooked on soul arround mid 1973, usual thing, youth clubs then started to go futher from my home town of Selby. By 74 I was going to the Blackpool Mecca as often as i could and that's the place that really gave me the outlook on music i still have today, Arthur tells of how he got started.
Mecca was located in the seaside town of Blackpool and with the Wigan Casino is known as the central venues in the history of the northern soul culture. The soul nights in Mecca became famous from from the open-minded and progressive approach to different styles, and it is said that over there the 70's modern soul scene really got underway.
I was buying bits at this time but didn't play them out at a club until i got a chance to do the early spot at the Leeds Central. This was a very well known and attended venue in it's day. 1978 was the year my DJing really got underway and I was a resident at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens dayer's and the Peterborough Fleet allniter's. It was at this time I started to find some of my own records in America. By 1982 I was fed up with the northern scene and concentrated on new releases both major & independant lables. I had lots of fun and made many great friends but by 1999 I was ready to get back on the northern scene. Lucky for me I was given the chance by Angela Lawrence to do the Trentham Gardens niter and I never looked back.
Our guest is expected to deliver a wide variety of 60's and 70's dancefloor soul, and with his experience quality is guaranteed. The night will kick off at 6 pm on the outdoor terrace of Kuudes linja with the cream of Finnish DJ's warming up.
Arthur Fenn's current favourites:
Two Plus Two- Look Around (Velgo)
Allan Harris- Love is the only Answer (unreleased)
The Antellects- Love Slave (Flodavieur)

The last Soul Sides of the year ends in the company of a true grade A veteran guest DJ, as Marc Forrest from Germany arrives to Kuudes Linja on the 27th of December. It is safe to say that he is the tightest foreigner to bless our club so far.
Marc Forrest started his career in 1986 playing Soul and Ska. Since then he has concentrated on rare soul. He founded the Hip City Soul Club in 1990. Marc's record collection and taste are rated high in the international soul scene and because of that he gigs around Europe regularly.
Our guest's record bag consists of most of the finest and rarest examples of soul music recorded between the 60's and 70's. The digestion of ham, casseroll or tofu schnitchel enjoyed during the holidays becomes easy when the quality northern, modern, funk, and r&b sounds blast from the speakers. The atmosphere has been better in the Soul Sides parties of the past year than ever, and this last night will complete the circle of peace, love and soul the way it should.
This soulful Saturday will kick of with our guest DJ at Bassoradio 102,8 Mhz at am 10-12.
A soul clash of unheard proportions takes place at the end of October. The complete line-up of the prestigeous Soul Seed club from Turku arrives to Kuudes linja. Soul Seed has been the #1 soul night in Finland for the past five years, and its sound is known for uncompromising quality. Month after month the dancefloor of pub Pikku-Torre has been packed with enthousiastic soul and funk fiends.
The music tastes of Soul Seed's four gentlemen complement each other perfectly. Piitu is known for playing raw and grimy funk. Felix Manell is an experienced dancefloor-DJ, who specialises in classy modern soul. Heikki K brings a full load of northern soul and gets crazy on the microphone. Heikki H is the double member of the night, representing both Turku's and Helsinki's soul scenes. Soul-Sami and Markus-Setä try to hold their ground against the old capitol's invasion.
Listen to the Soul Sides radio show with Soul-Sami and Markus-Setä every Saturday 10-12 am at Bassoradio 102,8 MHz or stream at www.basso.fi
Soul Sides dj's on Ricky-Tick night @ Kuudes Linja Saturday 27.9.2008
On September 27 starting at 10pm, Jazz Heat Bongo Beat, the Ricky-Tick night at club Kuudes Linja, presents an evening to remember. In a very special scene-bonding DJ extravaganza, four clubs share the same space for one night only. Jazz Heat Bongo Beat will feature the DJs of clubs Wahoo!, Soul Sides, and Somethin' Else, so needless to say, the selection of organic dancefloor music will be wide and far-reaching.
The quintet of DJs featured here, Sampsa Vilhunen & Vesa Yli-Pelkonen (Wahoo!), Soul-Sami & Markus-Setä (Soul Sides), and Matti Nives (Somethin' Else), are each active figures in the Helsinki organic grooves scene. Expect proper dancefloor jazz, deep funk & soul, scorching afrobeat, heavy latin sounds, plus much more.
This one cooks!
Soul Sides ends the summer with a bang! Not only will we have a live band, but also a foreign guest DJ. The live bit will be brought to you by the organ/drums duo Nieminen & Litmanen, who are known of their furious live energy. The duo will offer their rare blend of instrumental "action jazz", which is a dynamic combination of boogaloo, r&b and jazz. These guys demonstrate that you don't need more than two people to get the party going.
Our guest DJ comes from St. Petersburg, Russia. DJ Chak is an experienced funk DJ and a promoter, who has almost single handedly run the Russian funk scene for the past 10 years. His parties have been headlined by serious world class DJ's like Ian Wright and Keb Darge. Misha is an expert in deep funk, boogaloo and hard edged soul and his set will complete the evening nicely.
This soulful Saturday will kick of with our guest DJ at Bassoradio 102,8 Mhz at am 10-12. The outdoor terrace at Kuudes Linja will open around 19 and some soulful DJ's will hit the decks.
In June, Soul Sides celebrates its 5 year anniversary. Our special guest, DJ Helena Strömdahl will join us from Malmö, Sweden. Helena hosts one of Sweden's premium soul nights, Club Function, with her partners Sebastian, Jonte and Joppe. She'll provide a selection of rare soul sounds, some of which will probably be heard in Finland for the first time. Soul-Sami, Markus-Setä and Heikki H will join in on the fun as usual.
The playing will start at 5pm on the terrace with a bunch of guest dj's celebrating Soul Sides' 5 years anniversary!
Listen to Helena's soul mix in mp3 format here and her just finished newest mix here!!!
In April, Soul Sides is proud to have special guest from club Wahoo, DJ Sampsa Vilhunen, who will undoubtedly get the dancefloor moving. In addition to modern soul gems, the dancers will be blessed with a healthy dose of northern, 60's r&b and latin soul from our dynamite guest. Resident DJ's Heikki H, Soul-Sami and Markus-Setä will provide the soulful content for the rest of the night.
The music will start on saturday morning along with the evening's guest at Soul Sides radio-show 26.4. times 10-12, on Bassoradio FM 102,8 Mhz, 105,9 Mhz from cable, or stream here.
Soul Sides is proud to kick off 2008 by introducing the rarely heard but more the passionate group of musicians, fronted by the fabulous vocals of Miss Saana. Her group The Missionaries belts out a furious blend of authentic soul and r&b, which is reminiscent of the Stax productions from the 60's and early 70's. Also once again, the Soul Sides Dj's bring only the best of rare soul and deep funk to the dancefloor.
We would like to welcome everybody to the official Christmas
after-party and New Year pre-party at Kuudes Linja. Some soulful
dancefloor action will help digest the tons of food you ate during the
holidays.
Finland's own funk sensation, The Soul Investigators will be setting
the stage on fire. They will play an all instrumental quartet set with
only original band members, which is a rare treat these days. You
won't want to miss that! Also, Dj's Heikki H, Soul-Sami and
Markus-Setä will dig out their best sounds for the evening.
